Free will

I’ve been asked to write and share my thoughts on the topic of “free will”. I have touched the topic generally earlier in a post I wrote about “Qadar”, so for those who have not read that input, (or if it’s been a while), you might want to have a look at it >here.

Let us try to understand the topic a bit further. Again, this is a topic without factual answers, so I am sharing my own personal thoughts on the matter. If I am right then it is from Allah, if I am wrong then it is from me.

The beginning…

The following words were the ones first revealed to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)… read and consider these words carefully…

Surah Al-Alaq 96:1-7
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-
Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:
Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-
He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-
Taught man that which he knew not.
Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds,
In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.

We are not self-sufficient and the limitations of “free will” is part of it. Let’s take a look at a few other ayat… these are touching on the notion of “free will”…

Surah Yunus 10:100
No soul can believe, except by the will of Allah, and He will place doubt (or obscurity) on those who will not understand.

Surah Al-A’raaf 7:186
To such as Allah rejects from His guidance, there can be no guide: He will leave them in their trespasses, wandering in distraction.

Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:160
If Allah helps you, none can overcome you: If He forsakes you, who is there, after that, that can help you? in Allah, then, Let believers put their trust.

The first thing we need to consider is this…

He has a plan

Surah Al-Qiyaama 75:36
Does man think that he will be left uncontrolled, (without purpose)?

Surah Saad 38:27
Not without purpose did We create heaven and earth and all between!

Surah Ash-Shura 42:49
To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills (and plans). He bestows (children) male or female according to His Will (and Plan),

Surah Al-Maaida 5:1
for Allah doth command according to His will and plan.

So this gives us a very clear idea that there is something much larger going on. Things are not just happening. There is a plan.

Surah Al-A’raaf 7:99
Did they then feel secure against the plan of Allah?- but no one can feel secure from the Plan of Allah, except those (doomed) to ruin!

Surah Al-Hadid 57:22-23
No misfortune can happen on earth or in your souls but is recorded in a decree before We bring it into existence: That is truly easy for Allah:
In order that ye may not despair over matters that pass you by, nor exult over favours bestowed upon you. For Allah loveth not any vainglorious boaster,-

Life and death

So with this plan in mind… we need also to consider the aspect of life as temporary…

Surah Yunus 10:49
Say: “I have no power over any harm or profit to myself except as Allah willeth. To every people is a term appointed: when their term is reached, not an hour can they cause delay, nor (an hour) can they advance (it in anticipation).”

Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:145
Nor can a soul die except by Allah’s leave, the term being fixed as by writing. If any do desire a reward in this life, We shall give it to him; and if any do desire a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give it to him. And swiftly shall We reward those that (serve us with) gratitude.

Surah Al-Ghaafir 40:67
It is He Who has created you from dust then from a sperm-drop, then from a leech-like clot; then does he get you out (into the light) as a child: then lets you (grow and) reach your age of full strength; then lets you become old,- though of you there are some who die before;- and lets you reach a Term appointed; in order that ye may learn wisdom.

Every act has its consequence, for better or worse… our intentions are either permitted, rewarded, or rejected…

Surah An-Najm 53:24-25
Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after?
But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong.

Surah Al-Baqara 2:255
His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth.

And all our intentions will be questioned…

Surah Qaaf 50:16
It was We Who created man, and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than (his) jugular vein.

Surah Al-Baqara 2:225
Allah will not call you to account for thoughtlessness in your oaths, but for the intention in your hearts; and He is Oft-forgiving, Most Forbearing.

Surah Al-Israa 17:36
And pursue not that of which thou hast no knowledge; for every act of hearing, or of seeing or of (feeling in) the heart will be enquired into (on the Day of Reckoning).

Success or failure

So we are following His plan for us in this life…

Surah Luqman 31:34
Verily the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah (alone). It is He Who sends down rain, and He Who knows what is in the wombs. Nor does any one know what it is that he will earn on the morrow: Nor does any one know in what land he is to die. Verily with Allah is full knowledge and He is acquainted (with all things).

Surah Taa-Haa 20:15
“Verily the Hour is coming – My design is to keep it hidden – for every soul to receive its reward by the measure of its Endeavour.

Life is not by chance. We do not succeed or fail because of random events. For a plan to work, things need to happen in a certain way. As it is, we are actually entertaining the idea of independence in many of the things we do and say, but… things we do in this life are things that He grants us…

Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:109
To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: To Him do all questions go back (for decision).

Surah Az-Zumar 39:49
Now, when trouble touches man, he cries to Us: But when We bestow a favour upon him as from Ourselves, he says, “This has been given to me because of a certain knowledge (I have)!” Nay, but this is but a trial, but most of them understand not!

Surah Al-Kahf 18:23-24
Nor say of anything, “I shall be sure to do so and so tomorrow”-
Without adding, “So please Allah!” and call thy Lord to mind when thou forgettest, and say, “I hope that my Lord will guide me ever closer (even) than this to the right road.”

Surah Al-Alaq 96:6-7
Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds,
In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.

In a sense, freedom can be found in knowledge and wisdom… it gives us the ability to think and see things differently…

Surah Al-Baqara 2:269
He granteth wisdom to whom He pleaseth; and he to whom wisdom is granted receiveth indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding.

We receive strength to withstand challenges in life… an awareness that we are being cared for. This generates a feeling of gratitude and comfort…

Surah At-Talaaq 65:3
And if any one puts his trust in Allah, sufficient is (Allah) for him. For Allah will surely accomplish his purpose: verily, for all things has Allah appointed a due proportion.

Some of my thoughts on “free will”. I hope you found this an interesting input and that it has brought something to consider.

The best of times to you all inshallah.
Peace, happiness, and stay faithful.

    1. Thank you so much for your encouraging words 😊🌹
There are many things in this life we don’t fully understand. And I think something like my thoughts on “free will” may not be too easily accepted by humans in general, because most people are happy with living in their “bubble” so to speak. But everything we do in life can be connected to the following aya…

      Surah Taa-Haa 20:15
“Verily the Hour is coming – My design is to keep it hidden – for every soul to receive its reward by the measure of its Endeavour.

The way I see it… the fact that most things are “hidden” from us, including our limitations when it comes to “free will”, can be tied to that aya. It’s all hidden for a purpose. Which is further hinted by these words…

      Surah Al-A’raaf 7:188
“Say: “I have no power over any good or harm to myself except as Allah willeth. If I had knowledge of the unseen, I should have multiplied all good, and no evil should have touched me […] ”

He wants to test and see our hearts and actions for what they truly are 😊🌹

      1. Of course the whole reason we are living is a test from Allah so our will must be according to Allah’s will otherwise we will fail this test

        1
        1. Yes 😊 But as I am trying to show through this input, and as I understand it, is that our will is always according to His. It is our intentions that sadly not always are. Everything in this life goes through Him. He either permits or stops our intentions according to His will and plan. We can not do anything outside of His decision.

          Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:109
To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: To Him do all questions go back (for decision).

And our path in this life is affected by our intentions. He then steers us either towards Him or away from Him…

          Surah Al-Baqara 2:225
Allah will not call you to account for thoughtlessness in your oaths, but for the intention in your hearts; and He is Oft-forgiving, Most Forbearing.

          Surah Aal-i-Imraan 3:160
If Allah helps you, none can overcome you: If He forsakes you, who is there, after that, that can help you? in Allah, then, Let believers put their trust.

          Surah Al-Kahf 18:28
nor obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us, one who follows his own desires, whose case has gone beyond all bounds.

          Surah Al-Anfaal 8:53
“Because Allah will never change the grace which He hath bestowed on a people until they change what is in their (own) souls: and verily Allah is He Who heareth and knoweth (all things).”

  1. If Allah wants to be good or bad He can but we all have this faith but our doings we are responsible for so if our hearts are pure and our intentions are good He will lead us to the right path so we can always make duaa for this and work on our hearts and intentions to be good and according to his will so we are responsible for our work but we believe that Allah Has the power to change everything unless we are not faithful and true believers

    1. The bad is caused by us. But if Allah permits anything bad to happen is so that we would be given a chance to learn from it.

      Surah Al-Baqara 2:30-31
They said: “Wilt Thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood?- whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?” He said: “I know what ye know not.”
And He taught Adam the names of all things; then He placed them before the angels, and said: “Tell me the names of these if ye are right.”

      Surah Al-Kahf 18:58
But your Lord is Most forgiving, full of Mercy. If He were to call them (at once) to account for what they have earned, then surely He would have hastened their punishment: but they have their appointed time, beyond which they will find no refuge.

Like you said here, “If our hearts are pure and our intentions are good He will lead us to the right path”, that’s it 😊🌹

      Surah Al-Lail 92:4
Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.

      Surah Al-Baqara 2:257
Allah is the Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light.

      Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:36
If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him.

It all depend on the –intentions– of our hearts 🙂
