Yet another active time has passed. I try to keep the site/blog updated at least once a week, but it can be a bit sporadic during the summer season depending on what my situation looks like. There was an interesting topic discussed during the Khutba held by brother Sameer on June 2nd… it dealt with the Arabic language…
We all know that this language is strongly attached to the Islamic faith. Most muslims reason that the only true way of understanding the Holy Quran is it its original language, Arabic. A translated Quran is often refered to as an “interpretation” of the Holy Quran. So… what is it with the Arabic language? As I usually do in times when I hold Khutba, I shared a brief summary of the original Arabic Khutba in English for the people in the congregation who have difficulty understanding Arabic. I have written the following input based on that summary…
The Khutba
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
The cornerstone of any civilization is its language. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) has bestowed upon us, the Islamic nation, a most eloquent and most honorable language, the Arabic language. It is the richest language in terms of vocabulary, and God Almighty honored it by choosing it to carry the religion of Islam. The Almighty said:
سورة الزخرف ٣
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:3
We have made it a Qur’an in Arabic, that ye may be able to understand (and learn wisdom).
He also gave a testament to its depth and richness in meaning with the following statement:
سورة فصلت ٤٤
وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا أَعْجَمِيًّا لَّقَالُوا لَوْلَا فُصِّلَتْ آيَاتُهُ
Surah Fussilat 41:44
Had We sent this as a Qur’an (in the language) other than Arabic, they would have said: “Why are not its verses explained in detail?
The Arabic language is the emblem of the Islamic religion. And the Quran, as revealed by Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) cannot be truly understood in its true and purest form except in Arabic.
And no worship is done except in it.
While a lot of people within the faith are arabic speakers, some of these people may still need to improve language skills. The Khutba likewise speaks to those who are not fluent and have a weak understanding of it. Let us not only hold on to a dream of becoming better, but do something about it. Embrace the chance to learn, or to pass on this knowledge to your children. Especially if they live in a society where a totaly different language is spoken. After all, this is a part of our journey. It is a good ambition to strive for in order to improve our understanding. Allahu Akbar.
