Peace… I felt this topic is too important and good to pass up, so I had to share it with you. It was the topic of the Khutba that was held on Friday (the 3rd), originally written by brother Sameer who held the Khutba in Arabic. I put together a brief summary and talked about it in English, which is the version I’m sharing with you here.
The Khutba
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
The word peace is something that the ears enjoy hearing, hearts and minds yearn for it, because there is no progress, no development or prosperity without it. Those who have experienced war and shielded themselves from its destructive fire realize the true value and meaning of peace.
Islam, our way of life, is the religion of peace. That is obvious from the name alone. Both the word “Islam” and the word peace in the Arabic language – “salam” – come from the same root. In fact, peace is an attribute describing The Almighty.
سورة الحشر ٢٣
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْمَلِكُ الْقُدُّوسُ السَّلَامُ
Surah Al-Hashr 59:23
Allah is He, than Whom there is no other god;- the Sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of Peace
When Islam came in a time of great struggles, it put great care in calling for peace, renouncing wars and conflicts. It prohibited attacking and harming others, whether by spoken words or by physical force and urged its followers to safeguard the rights of others. Allah said:
سورة المائدة ٣٢
مَنْ قَتَلَ نَفْسًا بِغَيْرِ نَفْسٍ أَوْ فَسَادٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَ النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا
Surah Al-Maaida 5:32
whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind
Our religion commanded us to be peaceful even to the ignorant ones. As Allah The Most High, stated:
سورة الفرقان ٦٣
وَعِبَادُ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ الْجَاهِلُونَ قَالُوا سَلَامًا
Surah Al-Furqaan 25:63
And the servants of (Allah) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace!”
So, the peace of Islam is not limited to muslims, it includes non-muslims as well. And, it’s quite beautifully sumned up by one aya:
سورة الممتحنة ٨
لَّا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَارِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوا إِلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِطِينَ
Surah Al-Mumtahana 60:8
Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.
So stay true to the faith, show mercy to each other and be at peace with those around you, so that you may be happy in this world and the next.

سورة الحجرات ١٣
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا ۚ إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ
Surah Al-Hujuraat 49:13
O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).
and this one…
سورة البقرة ٦ ٥ ٢
لَا إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ ۖ قَد تَّبَيَّنَ الرُّشْدُ مِنَ الْغَيِّ ۚ فَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِالطَّاغُوتِ وَيُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَىٰ لَا انفِصَامَ لَهَا ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
Surah Al-Baqara 2:256
Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.

سورة التوبة ٣٨
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَا لَكُمْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمُ انفِرُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ اثَّاقَلْتُمْ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ ۚ أَرَضِيتُم بِالْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا مِنَ الْآخِرَةِ ۚ فَمَا مَتَاعُ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ
Surah At-Tawba 9:38
O ye who believe! what is the matter with you, that, when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, ye cling heavily to the earth? Do ye prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter.
The same seem to have been true of people of that time… but yes, it is a lot more dominant now. That is why I wrote this input, “what is a muslim”, in order to illustrate that most humans who refer to themselves as such, are using it as a title. In this life, we are all striving to be, (in character), some more, some less, and some may not even be aware that they are, but they strive in His cause with strong belief. Those who are granted Jannah have achieved the goal in life of being a “muslim”. As to those who set up differences or lived in complete distraction…
سورة الجاثية ١٧
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَقْضِي بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فِيمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ
Surah Al-Jaathiya 45:17
Verily thy Lord will judge between them on the Day of Judgment as to those matters in which they set up differences.
