Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam, designed to help people in need and those striving in His cause.
Helping others is the basic principle that Islam stands for and all people are aware that life has a time limit. This is something we should keep in mind, especially when it comes to money and wealth.
As the Qur’an says:
سورة العنكبوت ٦٤
وَمَا هَـٰذِهِ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا لَهْوٌ وَلَعِبٌ ۚ وَإِنَّ الدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ لَهِيَ الْحَيَوَانُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ
Surah Al-Ankaboot 29:64
What is the life of this world but amusement and play? but verily the Home in the Hereafter,- that is life indeed, if they but knew.
It is something repeated in the Qur’an in several places. We should consider that everything we receive and own in this life comes from Allah, the Most Generous. He does not ask for everything but only from what is seen as excessive.
سورة محمد ٣٦
وَإِن تُؤْمِنُوا وَتَتَّقُوا يُؤْتِكُمْ أُجُورَكُمْ وَلَا يَسْأَلْكُمْ أَمْوَالَكُمْ
Surah Muhammad 47:36
and if ye believe and guard against Evil, He will grant you your recompense, and will not ask you (to give up) your possessions.
But if Allah is All-Powerful and can solve poverty, why then are we in this situation? Distress? It can be summed up with the following words:
سورة طه ١٥
إِنَّ السَّاعَةَ آتِيَةٌ أَكَادُ أُخْفِيهَا لِتُجْزَىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا تَسْعَىٰ
Surah Taa-Haa 20:15
“Verily the Hour is coming – My design is to keep it hidden – for every soul to receive its reward by the measure of its Endeavour.
Zakat is an essential part of this striving… to help those in need.
