Time and aging

Time and aging have an effect on all of us, but in different ways. We attach it to things like inherited genes, personal habits, good or bad health and so on… those are elements we use to explain it to ourselves… we may not always think that it is in Allah’s power to grant or restrict according to His will and plan, even in such matters…

Stereotypical ideas are usually connected to age and numbers. When people ask my age I usually make them guess. The most common responses tend to be somewhere between 20-30. The reply I give often come as a bit of a shock or may be perceived as a joke…

The image above is with a written date. Most of the images in the photo gallery have been taken this same year (2020), the Ramadan photo also has the year stated on it, all the images of me on the pages (with the exception of “my story” and the obvious baby picture in “experiences”), and all the videos are from 2020. (In the “Cake Maker video” I even state the date in voice.)

Take a quick peek at the birthdate on my driver’s licence…

A quick calculation.. that would make me 45 at the time the photos and videos were recorded and taken, (I’m writing this input October 10th, 2020.)
I have met many reactions of surprise. Most conclude that age is just a number, it’s the usual saying that goes around…

In life, people stick together through time or grow apart. My interests have always been different from others around me, so most of my former childhood friends and classmates have gone their own separate ways. Sometimes I am surprised by what time has done to some of them when I come across them on social media. Then I realize, it’s not them… it’s me.

The reason I am telling all this is not to boast… after all, this is not my doing.
It is a blessing from Allah. Reason I share this is because it gave me an idea about something I read in the Quran…

Consider the following aya…

Surah Al-Ankaboot 29:14
We (once) sent Noah to his people, and he tarried among them a thousand years less fifty: but the Deluge overwhelmed them while they (persisted in) sin.

We see from this aya that Prophet Nuh must have been around a thousand years old, at least. Our stereotypical ideas about age then makes us imagine an extremely old and fragile man… is it possible? I guess a lot of people say mashallah and then dismiss it as a fable. As I looked myself in the mirror, it came to me… Prophet Nuh must have had an extremely slow aging process. I am by no means comparing myself to him, but a slow age development has given me a new perspective on aging…

Surah Al-Maaida 5:120
To Allah doth belong the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is therein, and it is He Who hath power over all things.

Time and age affects us all differently… but at the end of the day, the most important thing to remember from life’s journey is this… it does not matter how much time we have…

Surah Al-Baqara 2:96
Thou wilt indeed find them, of all people, most greedy of life,-even more than the idolaters: Each one of them wishes He could be given a life of a thousand years: But the grant of such life will not save him from (due) punishment. For Allah sees well all that they do.

…what matters, above all else, is what we do with the time that is given to us.
